Photography is a second art for me, the other, in which I actually received some professional training, being music, and more specifically the piano. I practise both of them in close alternation, going from sitting at the piano, working through my daily repertoire, to working on a photo and making a print. I don't know whether it's this close alternation, or the black and white aspect of the keyboard, but I find that the one very much informs the other.
There's something about the sound and feel of the piano that to me parallels the aesthetic of traditional black and white photography, I would say it lies somewhere in the neutral and abstract element in both. Apart from that I don't follow any particular theme or subject, nor do I try for an individual style. Most of my photos are taken while I'm out walking, though more recently I've also done some still life, and I'm generally looking for a scene that has potential for producing a good picture. Often in fact the photos that I like the best come not from beautiful subjects like calla lilies, but from small-scale scenes like twigs reflected in water, that no one would look twice at on their own, but that generate a unique new image with its own 'face'. So while I'd be no good at all at true portraits, I like to think of my photos as portraits in a different sense, portraits of scenes in black and white.
